Dorothy Lucille Maxwell Johnson was born on November 22, 1942 in Galax, VA and died March 19, 2014 at the Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, VA. She was the first born child of Allie Rose Cox Maxwell and the late William Anderson Maxwell. Dorothy attended school in Galax and graduated from Scott Memorial High School in Wytheville, VA in 1961. After graduation, she found employment and made her home in Roanoke, VA. She worked for Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company from 1970 to 2004 as a Policy Assembly Clerk. She also worked as a Cashier for the Kroger Company from 1974 to 1996. Her last full time place of employment was Hanover Direct, where she worked as a Monogram Clerk from 2005 to 2012. In August 1967, Dorothy married the late Bernard E. Johnson, Sr. of Norfolk, VA. From their union, they had one daughter, Bernadine. She was a member of Oldtown Baptist Church and recently joined Sprit of Life Church International in Roanoke under watch care.
Dorothy always had a tremendous work ethic. She was dependable, orderly and thorough. She had a no nonsense approach to life. She enjoyed shopping and travelling. However, the most recent joy of her life was her granddaughter, Mikayla.
Dorothy is survived by her mother, Allie Rose Maxwell of Galax, one brother, William K. Maxwell of Ft. Washington, MD, two sisters, Sarrah Maxwell of Washington, DC and A. Elaine Sydnor of Roanoke, VA, a daughter, Bernadine J. Dykes, son-in-law, Roy K. Dykes and granddaughter, Mikayla Rose Dykes of Clifton, VA. She also leaves behind one niece, Cheryl Maxwell, one nephew, Greg Hargove, as well as a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, friends and other family members.
Public viewing of the body will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 2:30 pm to 4 pm at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home at 201 West Center Street in Galax, VA followed by a graveside service at 4:30 pm at Oldtown Cemetery. A repast will be held immediately following the graveside service at Oldtown Baptist Church.
