Dewey Carl Sturdivant age 85 of Galax, Virginia passed away Wednesday evening in the Golden Living-Blue Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center.

Mr. Sturdivant was born in Akron, Ohio on November 1, 1926 to Lynn and Alla Rose Wingate Sturdivant.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Dora L. Sexton Sturdivant and son Thomas Dewey Sturdivant.

Mr. Sturdivant entered the Galax Volunteer Fire Department in 1969 and had 43 years of service to the department. He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Gary Boring; Betty and Charlie McDaniel all of Galax, Virginia; grandchildren Pam Phillips; Thomas Dewey (T.J.) Sturdivant, Jr.; Joe Honeycutt and Ben Honeycutt; great-granddaughter Jaiden Honeycutt; sister Ruth Hollaway of Las Vegas, Nevada; brothers Fred Sturdivant of Stuarts Draft, Virginia; Herbert Sturdivant of Independence, Virginia; sisters-in-law and spouse Frances Roberts of Pofftown, North Carolina; Joyce and Bob Reavis of Galax, Virginia; Ollie Sturdivant of Sparta, North Carolina; Wanda Sturdivant of Independence, Virginia; brother-in-law Bill Snyder of Dayton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; special friend Louise Diamond.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the old Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. James Cowley officiating. Burial will follow in the Monta Vista Cemetery with Rites by the Galax Volunteer Fire Department. The family will receive friends Friday evening from six until eight at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Hillcrest Baptist Church Building Fund 1205 South Main Street Galax, Virginia 24333 or to the Galax Volunteer Fire Department P.O.
