Dennis Robert Combs, 74, of Galax, passed away peacefully at Forsyth Medical Center on May 21, 2024.

He was born to the late Robert and Martha Combs on March 17, 1950, in Carroll County, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Geneva Lowe of Fancy Gap, Virginia.

Dennis served 26 honorable years in the United Sates Navy and Naval Reserves from 1969 to 1995. Dennis received the Second National Defense Service Medal, Battle "E" Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal, Third Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Dennis also served in Desert Storm. While serving in the Navy, Dennis was employed as an accountant at the Southwestern Virginia Training Center where he dedicated over 38 years, retiring in 2011. Dennis was a graduate of Hillsville High School and Wytheville Community College. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee.

Dennis is survived by his wife Marie Ashlock Combs, three stepsons, Donald Meador, Jr.; Anthony Meador (Meg); Stanley Meador (Courtney); and brother-in-law Ronald Lowe.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Kevin Rosenfeld officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery with Military Rites by the Grayson VFW Post 7726. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 AM until time for the funeral service at the First Baptist Church.
