David Carroll Carpenter, age 85, of Sparta, NC passed away at The Landings of Chestnut Grove on October 2, 2022. David was born in Sparta, NC on April 5, 1937 to John Mac and Stella Mae Carpenter.

David worked as a projectionist in The Penn Theater in Independence, Va. He also worked in management at Hanes Corporation in Sparta, NC, as well as in Galax, VA, before returning to Sparta to work in management at the Dr. Grabow Pipe Factory. He then worked at Carolina Narrow before becoming an electrical trade teacher at Alleghany High School and Wilkes Community College. In retirement, he served as the director of the Sparta Food Closet.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Viola Burke, and his beloved son-in-law, Keith Oliver. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eleanor Carpenter, of Sparta; one daughter, Yvonne Oliver; three grandchildren and their spouses, Meghan and Brian Norris, Nelson Oliver and Holly Harper, and Logan and Celeste Oliver; and two great-grandchildren, Emerson and Nora Beth Norris.

David was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Piney Creek, NC, a Shriner, a volunteer fireman in Sparta, and served as an Alleghany County Commissioner.

Services will be held at the Sparta United Methodist Church on Monday, October 10, 2022 at 1:00pm.
