Dale Martin Chappell 78 of Galax, Virginia passed away Friday, November 2, 2018 in the Wake Forest Cancer Center.

Dale was born in Galax, Virginia on September 24, 1940 to Clyde and Sadie Kegley Chappell. After graduating from Galax High School he served in the United States Army. Dale married the late Barbara Harman Chappell who brought love, grace, home and family into his life. One of Dale's passions  "The American Automobile" was exemplified by being a faithful and  steadfast twenty-six year employee of Galax Motor Company. Dale's devotion, loyalty and service continued thirty years while working for Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.

He considered his co-workers family! He adored, honored, and cherished his extended family of brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. Dale was a longtime member of the Galax First United Methodist Church. Dale's love of  "The Open Road" was equaled by his building and design interests never daunted by a projects  complexity or complication. He gained profound joy helping neighbors and strangers alike. Dale and his beloved Barbara's selfless generosity will forever be missed.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Sadie K. Chappell, wife Barbara H. Chappell, sister Melba C. Burcham. Survivors include his daughter Kelley L. Chappell, sisters Mae Aline Chappell and Edna C. Moore, brother and sister-in-law Willard and Frances B. Chappell, brother-in-law Buford Burcham, nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Kelley expresses deepest gratitude for the unfaltering, compassionate medical care Dale received from his Wake Forest care team and Mt. Valley palliative and hospice care. Thank you all.

Dale's funeral service will be held Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 3:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church of Galax, with the Rev. Don Fox and Rev. Myron Dalton officiating. Interment will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday in the sanctuary from 1:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the First United Methodist Church. Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
