Obituary

Clifton Phibbs, 88, long-time resident of Fries, passed away Saturday, April 21. He was the last surviving child of Oscar & Colombia Horton Phibbs. He proudly served in the US Armed Forces during World War II. He journeyed to Cairo and Africa and returned with stories and glimpses of culture he continued to share with others throughout his life.

He was a hard-working husband and father, devoting years of his life to Hanes, working in the Fries Textile Mill and driving a milk truck for Sealtest, making life-long friends along the way.

Cliff never met a stranger, a park bench he didn't like, a sports team he couldn't discuss, or a joke he couldn't tell. He treasured life, prided himself on being a good friend and neighbor, and valued his family above all else.

He is survived by Louise, his wife of 64 years, a son and daughter-in-law Steve & Cheryl Phibbs of Winston-Salem, and their children Victoria, Colin & Spencer. Also surviving are daughter-in-law Linda Phibbs and granddaughter Christa, of Myrtle Beach, SC and a special niece, Vicki Lynn Roberts of Fries. He was preceded in death by his son Rick.

The family wishes to thank members of the extended family, most notably, Junior Anderson & Max Hall who contributed to Cliff's comfort & care on a daily basis.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 25 at Vaughan-Guynn from 12-2 PM with a private graveside service for the family immediately following at Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fries Sports Club, P O Box 173, Fries, VA ; the First Baptist Church of Fries, or Fries Methodist Church.
