Obituary

Claude was born on March 26, 1939 in Woodlawn, Virginia to Richard Fred and Virginia Elizabeth Reynolds Burnett. He married the love of his life, Betty Ann Bartlett in 1958. They spent time early in their marriage moving around with the children while Claude managed Roses stores. He gave up that career to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer in the 1970's.  In his spare time working for the Galax Police Department he was also an educator, on the weekends teaching driver improvement class.  Many in this area and beyond have had the privilege and enjoyment of this experience. Claude worked his way up to the rank of Lieutenant and retired after 25 years of service.  He was always an example of hard work and sacrifice that has led generations of his family to pursue working in law enforcement and public service. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed seeking out antique bottles, Coca Cola memorabilia, and Santa figurines. He was the Galax contact for the Virginia Special Olympics Torch Run which he enjoyed for many years. Claude had a wonderful heart and always a funny story to tell and a legacy that will live on. He loved his church family at Gladeville United Methodist Church where he was a member and attended regularly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Betty Ann-his wife of 54 years, Brother Gene, and Sister Betty Jo Grubb. He is survived by his sister Barbara Ann Thompson, daughter Donna Arnold (Tommy), Steve (Krista), Mark (Kathy), Brad (Michelle), 14 grandchildren,18 great grandchildren, many special nieces, nephews, extended family, and special friend Garry Boyette.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Monta Vista Cemetery with Pastor Rick Clark officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations be made to the childrens cancercause.org.

He will surely be missed, our beloved Daddy and Papa has gone to his immortal home. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of the Hillsville Health and Rehab Center for the love and care they gave to their father and grandfather.
