Obituary

This is a courtesy announcement for the Dixon family.

Charlie Alexander Dixon age 81 of Corryton, Tennessee (formerly of Galax), passed away on May 21, 2024 in Rutledge, Tennessee. Charlie, also known as Alec, was born January 8, 1943 in Grayson County, Virginia to Charlie James Dixon and Hazel Billings Dixon.

He is survived by three sisters: Sally Rakes of Woodlawn, Virginia; Mary and Frank Leonard of Wytheville, Virginia and Nancy Salcido of Galax, Virginia. One sister in law: Trish Dixon of Woodlawn, Virginia. One brother in law: James Tilley of Galax, Virginia. And special friend, Alice Johnson of Rutledge, Tennessee.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila McElhaney Dixon; parents Charlie and Hazel Dixon; sister Betty Tilley; brother Griggs Dixon; two brother in laws, Benny Martin and Al Salcido and numerous special nieces, nephews and friends.

Alec grew up on the banks of New River near Fries, Virginia and attended the Gossan Mines School at Iron Ridge and Woodlawn High School until he joined the military. Charlie proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal.

After being discharged from the Navy, he became a diesel mechanic, auto body repair man, business owner, and truck driver. In addition to constructing a house for he and Sheila, he enjoyed woodworking and building small bird houses and keepsake boxes.

Alec was an avid hunter for deer, rabbits and upland game birds, especially for the ruffled grouse. He loved his dogs. He enjoyed fishing the rivers and lakes. Alec loved a good joke and had a good sense of humor. He enjoyed listening to bluegrass, old style country and southern gospel music. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a loving husband, fun uncle and good friend. He is truly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Galax, Virginia area.
