Carolyn Bartlett Lyons age 73 of Fries, Virginia passed away Friday morning at her home.
Carolyn was born in Galax Virginia on April 3, 1939 to Albert Gladstone and Agnes McKnight Bartlett. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother A.G. Bartlett.
She is survived by her husband Don L. Lyons of Fries, Virginia; daughter and son-in-law Jeanie and Terry Brooks of Clayton, North Carolina; grandson Merritt Brooks; sister Nancy B. Watson of Fries, Virginia; several nieces and nephews.
Carolyn graduated from Fries High School in 1957. She received her teaching degree from Radford College in 1961. She was a devoted teacher, coach and mentor for 40 years retiring from Grayson County School Systems in 2001. Following her retirement she continued to substitute for several years. Her passion for teaching was evident as she touched lives of so many.
She was a member of the Galax-Grayson Retired Teachers Association, a member of the Fries Woman's Club, a member of the Fries High School Wildcats Sports Hall of Fame. Carolyn was a long time dedicated member of the Stevens Creek United Methodist Church.
Her sweet smile, reassuring calmness, creativity, excellent cooking and friendship will be dearly missed.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Stevens Creek United Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Providence Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from six until eight at the Stevens Creek United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Elk Creek Fire and Rescue Department, the Fries Fire and Rescue Department or the Stevens Creek United Methodist Church.
