Obituary

Carmen Susette Sumner, 56, of Lincolnton, North Carolina, formerly of Galax, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Feb 12, 2026. Born on February 17, 1969, Carmen spent her early life in Galax before moving to Lincolnton, where she lived for the past 19 years.

After graduating college, Carmen dedicated her career to serving others through her work in the medical field. She worked for many years in medical records for various doctors—most notably with Dr. Joseph Puma at the Heart and Vascular Office. Carmen often said she spent so much time going to doctors and working for doctors that she practically was one, and those who knew her would agree she could have been.

Upon moving to North Carolina, Carmen continued her career as a secretary for the City of Lincolnton, where she quickly became known as "the voice of the city." She later finished her professional journey in reception with Atrium Health Hospital in Lincolnton, where her kindness and warm presence brightened the days of coworkers and visitors alike.

Carmen also gave generously of her time and spirit. She was a dedicated community volunteer and served as a vital member of the Lincoln County Coalition Against Child Abuse board. Her faith guided every step of her life—no matter where she lived, her first priority was always finding a church home. Carmen was a woman of deep and genuine faith who not only talked the talk but truly walked the walk.

Everything she did was with grace and a smile. Her positive attitude was infectious, her love fierce, and her determination unwavering. She never let obstacles stop her—there was always a way forward, especially with the support of her loyal friends and family. She loved to travel and cherished every adventure, often crediting her "village" for helping her go and do all she dreamed of.

Carmen was preceded in death by her grandparents; her father, Roger Sumner; her beloved nephew, Charlie Mitchell; Her brother-in-law Darrell Mitchell; and brother in law Ramon Wix. She is survived by her mother, Peggy Sumner; sister, Lisa Mitchell; brother and brother in law, Brad Sumner and Sam Witherspoon; niece and husband, Molly and Byron Mitchell; and great-nephew, Wilson Mitchell, the core group of friends (Christy, Karen M., Karen P., Sonya and Catie) along with countless dear friends—too numerous to name but each deeply loved by Carmen (and we all know who we are).

A Celebration of Carmen's Life will be held on Sunday, February 22. Visitation will be from 1:00– 2:00 pm with services to follow at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax, Virginia. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Arthritis Foundation or the Lincoln County Coalition Against Child Abuse.

Carmen was a blessing to everyone who knew her—whether for five minutes or fifty-seven years—and her legacy of kindness, faith, and joy will continue to inspire all whose lives she touched.
