Billy Franklin Martin passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016 after fighting a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Charlotte, NC, on June 1, 1929. Survivors include his wife of 61years, Ninnan; son, David (Newbern,VA) and daughter, Kelli Mowbray and her husband Rick (Roanoke, VA). In addition, he is survived by sisters, Peggy Woolwine (Radford,VA) and Nancy Fennell (Mebane, NC) and her husband Joe. Mr. Martin is also survived by two uncles, Garnett Steele and Bill Carter, two sisters-in-law, Zeo Stone and Delsie Aldridge, all of Mt. Airy, NC, in addition to many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Father, James Frank Martin and his wife, Rozelle; Mother, Ola Steele Martin; and Brother, Clark Marvin Martin.
Mr. Martin graduated from Radford High School in 1949, joined the Navy in September, 1950, and was honorably discharged in July, 1954. Bill married Ninnan Pack in 1955, and joined the Flat Rock Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy, NC. He joined their choir and sang for 10 years.
In 1966, the Martins moved to Galax, after he was transferred by the A&P Tea Company. They transferred to the Galax Presbyterian Church where Bill served as both Deacon and Elder throughout their 50 year membership. He later joined their choir and continued to "make a joyful noise" as long as he was able to attend.
Bill joined the Galax Y's Mens Club soon after their move and received multiple awards as both President and Y's Men of the Year. Additionally, he served for 14 years on the Galax Parks & Recreation Commission. His employment also included service to Chestnut Creek Upholstery, Galax Mirror Company, and Floyd Motor Company.
Mr. Martin served the Lord he loved, his church, his family, and his community with dedication, love, and commitment that lasted more than 60 years.
Arrangements have been made by Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at Galax Presbyterian Church (Warrick Hall) on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from noon until 2:00pm, with a celebration of life in the church sanctuary at 2:00pm. Graveside service are to follow at Felts Memorial Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Galax Presbyterian Church (Emergency Fund or Backpack Buddies).
