Obituary

Betty Lou Holcomb Bobbitt, 79, of Blacksburg, formerly of Galax, passed away December 8, 2009. She was born on November 17, 1930 in Fries, Virginia to William and Alza Holcomb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garnett W. Bobbitt. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Gilmer Holcomb and Philip Holcomb and her sister, Iris Harrell.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve & Deena Bobbitt of Massanutten, and her daughter and son-in-law, Martha & Brad Winesett of Fairlawn, and her grandchildren, Dylan Steven Bobbitt, William James Bobbitt, Jake Conner Winesett and Evan Alexander Winesett. In addition she is survived by her sister, Faye Fielder of Nashville, Tennessee; Laurene Copeland of Phoenix, Arizona; Peggy Walker of Peoria, Arizona, and sisters-in-law Carol Holcomb of Daytona, Florida; Kathaleen Holcomb of Faith, North Carolina and Laura Carico of Galax, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bobbitt was a proud graduate of Fries High School. She attended Madison College (now James Madison University) and graduated from Lynchburg College, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. She later received a master's degree from Virginia Tech.

Mrs. Bobbitt touched countless lives as a teacher and coach at Jackson Memorial High School, George Wythe high School, Hillsville High School, and Woodlawn Intermediate School. After retiring in 1991, Mrs. Bobbitt traveled with friends and enjoyed the "senior" activities at the Galax Recreation Center, including bridge and water exercise. When her health began to fail several years ago, Mrs. Bobbitt moved to Blacksburg where she was a resident of the Showalter Center and the Kroontje Health Care Center.

Mrs. Bobbitt will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education, 311 West Center Street, Galax, VA 24333

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 4:00 PM in Felts Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Myron Dalton officiating. A reception at First Christian Church Fellowship Hall will follow the graveside service.
