Obituary

Barry Lynn Lyons, 82, of Galax, transitioned peacefully into the arms of his heavenly family on Thursday evening, February 26, at Waddell Nursing Home, where he was receiving hospice care.

Born October 4, 1943, in Fries, Barry was the son of the Rev. Ben and Mary Lyons. He grew up in Fries and graduated from Fries High School, where he was known for his athletic ability and especially for his excellence on the football field. During those formative years, he met a young woman from Galax, Susie Richardson. Their love story began in high school and blossomed into a lifelong commitment; they were married by his uncle, Buren, on the very day Barry graduated from high school.  Susie preceded him in death, but their enduring love remained one of the defining gifts of his life.

Barry began his working career in the textile industry. After the closing of the Burlington Industries plant in Galax, he embarked on a new vocational path in water treatment, serving first in Galax and later in Pulaski. This work was more than employment to him — it was a calling he deeply valued, allowing him to serve his community in quiet, faithful ways.

He is survived by his son Monte Lyons and wife Susie; his son Barry Lyons and spouse Mike; his beloved grandchildren, Ethan and Kyleigh; Ethan's fiancée, Sadie; and his special friend, Ann McCormick. His family was the joy of his life and the center of his world.

Barry was a man of simple pleasures and deep convictions. He loved the outdoors and treasured time spent hunting and fishing with Monte and his family. He found beauty in nature, meaning in writing poetry, and strength in his unshakeable faith. His life was marked by a quiet but powerful Christian witness — a faith not merely spoken, but lived.

Above all, Barry will be remembered for his boundless capacity to love. His love extended far beyond his immediate family to friends, neighbors, and even strangers. It was a love shaped by his devotion to Christ and sustained by a steadfast belief in grace. Those who knew him were touched by his gentleness, generosity, and the steady assurance that they were deeply cared for.

His legacy of faith, devotion, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the lives of all who were blessed to know him.

Services will be at West Galax UMC (108 McCamant Drive) on Monday, March 2, with visitation at 10:00 am and service at 11:00 am. The family requests privacy after the service.
