Barbara Ruth
Byrd Williams
September 9, 1935 – October 10, 2024
Barbara Ruth Byrd Williams passed away peacefully in Gainesville, Virginia on October 10, 2024. Barbara was born at home on the family farm, September 9, 1935, in McKenney Virginia. She was the youngest of eight children born to Aldine Kiefer Byrd and Margie Lee Bourne and raised on a tobacco & dairy farm.
The Byrd siblings always took pride in their "Can Do Spirit" and "Work Ethic", even in the hardest of times. This was particularly true after the sudden loss of their father in 1939, leaving a young mother to raise her children alone during the Great Depression.
Barbara often experienced the hardships of farm life, but later would say those life lessons were invaluable.
Margie and Kiefer taught their children that God and family were the pillars of their strength and that by treating their neighbors as themselves, they were fulfilling God's promise for their heavenly reward. When not helping on the family farm, Barbara enjoyed singing in the church choir, 4-H Club and performing in school plays.
As a young wife and mother, Barbara worked hard to keep her family intact. With the help of her mother, Barbara moved in 1960 to the Washington D.C. area. She understood that "The Big City" would provide more opportunities to support her family.
This season of Barbara's life brought not only new-found friends, but most importantly, the love of her life, Jesse P. Williams. They had one date and Barbara stole Jesse's heart. Soon thereafter they wed in Alexandria, Virginia where they combined their two families and within a few years, welcomed a baby girl together.
Barbara and Jesse provided a loving, "God Centered"environment for their family. They enjoyed weekend road trips with their kids and special occasions around the dinner table. Barbara always went the extra mile, whatever the need, and extended her gracious hospitality to new and old friends alike. In later years, Barbara and Jesse were excited to expand their adventures to Europe, Alaska and Hawaii.
Beyond her family, Barbara loved good food, good friends, Virginia Byrd family genealogy, entertaining, pretty antique dishes, fresh cut flowers from her garden, any reason to get dressed up and a fine dose of Common Sense. She took pride in her acute ability to work her way up in different jobs, even without a college degree. After a successful 25 year career, as his Office Manager, Barbara retired from Dr. John Hoyle's general surgeon's practice in Old Town, Alexandria in 1995. As a widow the last 20 years, Barbara resided in Strasburg, Virginia, where she continued to stay active at the Strasburg church of Christ and in local politics, up until the last six months. Her final wish was that her loved ones be reunited in heaven.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse P. Williams, stepson Mike Williams, grandson Justin Williams and son in law Archie Barker.
Barbara is survived by her three children, Jackie Barker, Randy Williams and Jessie (Mark O'Brien). "Nana" will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Michael Williams (Cinda), Amber (Mark Wood), Lily O'Brien and Connor O'Brien; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Williams and Cash Wood, and numerous loving nieces and nephews. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to her wonderful caregivers, particularly her daughter, Jackie. Your care and support gave us treasured memories in her final days. The many loving notes, visits and prayers, provided much comfort.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 19th at 2:00 pm in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Evangelist J. Perry Sexton officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 pm until time for the funeral service at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery with a reception to follow at The Blue Ridge Golf Club. A donation may be made to samaritanspurse.org or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in memory of Barbara Williams.
