Ballard Fred (Freddie) Birchfield age 64 of Independence, Virginia passed away Sunday night in the Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.

Freddie was born in Welch, West Virginia on September 17, 1956 to Walter Dalphas and Lyda Katherine Blankenship Birchfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Francis Elaine Birchfield and a brother Walter Stephen Birchfield.

He is survived by  his fiancee' Rachel Thomas of Independence, Virginia;  nieces Cherie Cochran (David Toothman); Amanda Cochran and a nephew Michael Cochran (Melissa) great-nieces and great-nephews Brandon Cochran, Justin Cochran, Britney Cochran and Sydney Cochran, Abigail Morgan, J. Dylan Morgan, Phoenix Toothman and Tauren Toothman; aunt Pauline Leonard and an uncle Ray Birchfield.

A memorial service will be held at a later date with the time and place to be announced.
