Obituary

Auralea Cox Curtis passed from this life on April 15,2011 in Galax, Virginia.

She was born in Carroll County October 14, 1927. She was preceded in death by her husband,
John E. Curtis of Long lsland, NY and by her parents Floyd and Blanche Cox of Galax, Virginia and
niece, Virginia Carol Cox.

She is survived by her brother and his wife, Kent and Laila Cox of Galax, Va.; their children Kaye
Cox -Andrews and husband, Stephen Andrews of Asheville, NC, Ken and Al Cox of Birmingharn,
AL, Calvin and Teri Cox of Cumming, GA as well as her husband's nieces and nephews Margaret
S. McManus of Waterbury, CT , Kari G. Lonning of Ridgefield, CT, Vivian H. Carroll of Brea, CA,
T. Stephen Lonning of Suffield, CT, Sarah C. Beard of Rutland Town, VT, Lucy G. Lonning of Suffield, CT,
and W. Cameron Beard of East Haddam, CT, and his wife Hege S. Beard. She is also
survived by 8 grand nephews and 6 grand nieces.

Mrs. Curtis was a 1947 graduate of Mary Washington College with a BA in Ed in Mathematics
and English. She received a Master's degree from Teacher's College at Columbia University.
Honors and awards include GE Fellowship and seven National Science Foundation Fellowships
for Advanced study in Mathematics.

She was past president of the Metropolitan Math study Group of New York, and a member of
Alpha Phi Sigma, Mathematical Association of America, National Council of Teachers in
Mathematics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Her professional experiences included teaching with the Freeport School System in New York
and a professorship with Suffolk County Community College in New York. Following her
retirement she continued teaching at Wytheville and New River Community Colleges in Virginia.

After retirement, Mrs. Curtis was a dedicated member of the Galax Presbyterian church. she
was an active member of the Galax Lions club and held several offices.
Mrs. Curtis loved her small animals, both birds and dogs. She was very interested in her
family's genealogy and was very happy to retire to her family's farm in Galax.

Funeral services will be held at Galax Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at 2
PM. Visitation will precede beginning at 1 pm. Burial will follow at Felts Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Lions Club of Galax Charities or the Galax
Presbyterian Church.
