Ardith Etta Stanley Nuckles, 89, passed away at her home on June 29, 2012.

Born in Carroll County, Saturday, February 3, 1923 to James Estel and Mary Etta Stanley. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years Forest E. Nuckles, her children, daughter and son-in-law Judie & Sheldon Gauvreau of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, son and daughter-in-law Jerry & Deborah Nuckles of Wytheville, VA, and daughter Mary Lynn Terry of Woodlawn, VA. Her grandchildren, Steven and Mark Boyles, Christian Newberry, Melissia Selwyn, Judie Lindsey, Jarrett, James, & John Nuckles, 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Also, her sisters Glennis Stanley Morris of Galax, Iva Stanley Wagner of Charlotte, NC, and her brother Arville L. Stanley of Laurel Fork, VA.

Ardith was a tireless worker in her church serving at various times as Sunday School teacher, WMU Leader, GA Leader, and choir member. She sang in the choir until she could no longer hear the notes. When she was unable to hear the message, she would read her Bible while the preacher was speaking. She also worked with both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She served as a Lioness for 20 years, and Lion for another 20 years and helped the Ladies of the Moose.

She devoted her life to her husband and children and would still play with the younger ones in the family. She was a superb basketball player and was a ferocious competitor. She played the guitar and sang with her brother and sister in an old time mountain music band on the radio in the 40's.

At home she was always singing while working around the house. She was a very gentle person. She was very protective of her family and devoted to them. She had a positive outlook and always had an easy laugh.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home from 6 until 8 PM. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 2, 2012 at 12 Noon in the First Baptist Church, Galax, VA with Rev. Sam Bartlett officiating. Interment will follow in the Felts Cemetery, Galax, VA.
