Alma Lee York Richardson of the Baywood community went to be with Jesus Monday, November 27, 2017.
She was born in Grant,VA, on February 7, 1920, to Dr. Charles L.and Stella Mae Irwin York, and was the youngest of five children.
She grew up in the happy and lovely mountain area of Twin Oaks, North Carolina. She attended both elementary and high school in Sparta and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. Her senior year she met her future husband, E.J. Richardson,Jr. They were married in 1940 and spent 35 happy years together. They had one daughter, Pamela York Richardson, in 1946. E.J. served the Lord as a farmer and a teacher, and was serving as Vocational Director at Galax High School at the time of his death in 1975.
Alma was a devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had attended business school in Washington, D.C. as well as Virginia Tech.She served for a while as librarian at Fries High School and taught fourth grade at the Baywood Elementary School for several years,before becoming (as she put it) "a full-time farmer."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband E.J. Richardson, Jr. and by her brother Edwin L. York and her sisters Elsie Y. Robertson, Grace Y. Goodman,and Ruby Y. Singletary.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Pam and Joe Don Dickenson, and her grandchildren--Joe Dickenson, Jr., Sarah D.and Armando Torres, and Mary D. and Brandon Tomlinson. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren--Alejandro, Lydia,and Samuel Torres,and Elena Tomlinson. Three nieces and spouses also survive: Marian and Lewis Porter, Sandy and George Bason,and Sunny and John Sonner.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM in the Baywood Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Randy Watts officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the Baywood Wesleyan Church.Burial will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Galax Gideon Camp, P.O.Box 614, Galax, VA. 24333, or to the animal shelter or rescue center of the donor's choice.
