Obituary

Alice Vaughan Alley, 92, of Fries passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 at Golden Living Center Blue Ridge in Galax. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 62 years, Charlie Alley.

She is survived by four sons & three daughters-in-law Tony & Anita Alley; Jim & Martha Alley all of Fries, Va.; Jerry & Barbara Alley of Virginia Beach, Va.; Charles Dean Alley of Johnson City, Tennessee; six grandchildren Aaron Alley , now serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq; Michelle Jones of Independence, Va..; Sharon Alley of Indianapolis, Ind.; Charlie Alley of Charlotte, N.C.; Athena A. Rhodes of Portsmouth, Va. and Rick Alley of Norfolk, Va.; nine great-grandchildren Samantha, Autumn and Hunter Alley of Germany; Stephanie, Nathan and Daniel Jones of Independence; Taylor Alley of Charlotte and Kaitlin and Tyler West of Portsmouth.

Other survivors are three sisters Mary K. Vaughan of Fries, Va.; Ruth Sage of Pulaski, Va.; Gladys Rine of Alexandria, La.; and three brothers Ralph of Galax, George of Charlottesville, Va. and Olin of Mt. Clemons, Mich.; numerous other brothers in-law and sisters-in-law also survive as does a special niece Doris Ann Byrd of Fries and a special nephew Larry Pack of Michigan.

Alice Alley was born July 29, 1915 in Cripple Creek, Va. the daughter of the late Robert & Dorothy Grubb Vaughan. When she was a young girl the family moved to Fries. She attended Fries High School and was a member of Fries United Methodist Church.

For many years she worked in the spinning room at Washington Mills Company in Fries.

She married Charlie R. Alley on May 24, 1935. Mr. Alley was a weaver at the mill and passed away March 1, 1998.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm in the Fries Cemetery with Rev. Lee Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:30 until 1:30 pm at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Fries United Methodist Church, Fries Fire Department of Fries Rescue Squad.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the many staff members at Golden Living Center for their loving care of their loved one and for the compassion shown the survivors during a time of grief.

The Alley family entrusted Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home with the funeral arrangements for Mrs. Alley.
